Rhino Iguana

Care Guide

Overview

- Common Name: Rhinoceros Iguana

- Scientific Name:  Cyclura cornuta 

- Origin: Caribbean (Hispaniola, Haiti & The Dominican Republic)  

- Size: 2 - 4.5 ft total length

- Lifespan: 20-40+ years

- Temperament: Generally docile but territorial and powerful  

Enclosure Setup

 Tank Size


- Minimum: 8' L x 4' W x 4' H

- Recommended: Custom room sized or outdoor enclosure


- Our Mixture: Soil/sand mix  


Decor


- Large basking platforms

- Hides (at least one warm side, one cool side)

- Digging/burrowing areas

- Branches/logs for climbing

Temperature and Heating

Temperature Gradient


- Basking Spot: 100-110°F

- Cool side: 80–90°F 

- Night temps: Can drop to 70–75°F  


Heating Equipment


- Halogen basking bulb (preferred)

- Ceramic heat emitter (if needed at night)


Humidity


- Target: 50-70% 

Lighting

- UVB: Essential

  - Use 10-12% UVB tube placed over basking area

- Photoperiod: 12-14 hours daily


Diet

Staples

- Collard greens

- Mustard greens

- Dandelion greens

- Some Squash, bell peppers, greens beans, and carrots

- Small amounts of fruits like mango, papaya, berries, and bananas 


Feeding Schedule


- Adults: 4-5 feedings per week

- Juveniles: every day


Supplements


- Calcium:

  - Without D3: 2-3x per week 

- Multivitamin: 1x per week


Water:

- Provide a large shallow water dish at all times, they may soak occasionally

Behavior and Handling

- Diurnal (active during the day)

- Territorial, especially males

- Head-bobbing can mean communications or warnings 


Health and Common Issues


Common Problems

- Dehydration: Wrinkled or leathery skin

- Shedding Issues: Low humidity

- Metabolic Bone Disease: Lack of calcium/UVB

- Parasites: Most prevalent in wild caught individuals


These are common health problems but if your animal is sick or having issues PLEASE CONSULT A REPTILE HEALTH PROFESSIONAL
